For the last few months, the world has trying to fend off COVID-19. People are temporarily out of jobs, schools are closing, and even people are being quarantined. These are really scary times. We’re encouraged to stay home and practice “social distancing.” With restaurants closing to only take out or drive thru, I’ve been seeing my food server and bartender friends worry how they’re going to pay their bills. I’ve also seen my friends get really stir-crazy already. So I figured I would offer my own list of 5 things to do while social distancing. Enjoy!
Five Things To Do During Social Distancing
Take advantage of all the free things being offered!
So many places are offering free things right now! Museums are offering free tours, gyms are offering free workout plans (if you’re a big fan of Cassey Ho’s blog Blogilates, she offering a free 14-day workout on her page). And don’t forget about universities that already offer free courses lot of cool things. Life doesn’t have to be just Netflix…
With that said… watch some Netflix!
If you’ve been itching to binge watch the latest season of Sabrina or The Witcher but haven’t had the time, now is the time to do it! Take this time off as an opportunity. Watch something totally new to you or take comfort in watching The Office for the umpteenth time.
Go on excursions that don’t cost money
Far too often, we forget that “going out” doesn’t always have to mean “spend money.” Go for a walk, go outside (weather permitting) and do some reading. For example, I’ve been meaning to learn how to properly use my mother’s Canon camera. Right now, I just point and shoot. Now I have the time to really learn how to take photos like a pro. The next thing I learn will be taking my knowledge and applying it to videos so I can start filming. 🙂
Embrace your inner nerd
When I first started dating my fiancé, he introduced me to this little game called Skyrim. I wouldn’t say I’m the best at it, but it’s been fun. I have several games and I’ve created backstories for them for my own entertainment. It’s totally nerdy and I love it. I use my storytelling in my Skyrim game and implement it in my Pathfinder tabletop game I play with my friends. As a writer, it helps me think about what I can do to make my character more interesting when she makes her choices.
Listen to podcasts
I love podcasts. Mainly true crime comedy podcasts. I listen to two of them on a fairly regular basis. But I also like to listen to anyone funny or interesting.
My recommended podcasts
Small Town Murder – hosts James and Jimmie host two podcasts: Small Town Murder and Crime In Sports. Both shows are hilarious.
The Gary Vee Audio Experience – If you don’t know who Gary Vee is, look him up. His honesty and perspective is so refreshing. You won’t regret it.
Hello From The Magic Tavern – If you related to my previous Skyrim/Pathfinder bullet, then you will like this podcast. It involves wizards with long titles, shapeshifters who prefer their badger-form, and a host who’s just trying to get back home to his wife and child.
So there you go! I hope these 5 things to do while social distancing can keep you entertained for a while. I know it sucks not being able to go out. But we’re all making big sacrifices for the greater good. We’ll all get through this together. Hang in there and make sure to wash your hands!
